• Working with the public-Medium to super annoying!

Heres some proper venting time.....here goes:

    -People who JUST WONT LISTEN!!!!

What is that about? Im not talking about people who are deaf either....As a customer sevrices person, you are employed and trained by whatever respective company to work in that particular job you are in. Once trained, you are let loose and are qualified to answer that particular persons enquiry. For that situation, you are the expert and you are the person with the knowledge and power to help the person who comes in.

So why oh why do some people insist on not believing in what you tell them! The people I've had in to see me or call me have ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous (one woman who went so far as to actually tell me straight out that she didnt believe what I was telling her....so what do you want me to do?!). Most peoples reaction to discovering that the only seats we have left for a particular event aren't very good are along the lines of 'so you haven't got seats in this area?' or 'so youre nearly sold out then?'....No we're not nearly sold out, we just haven't got those great seats you've been expecting to get because you seem to think we'd hold them off just for you! Multiply that by 100 if the event is very popular and it does get very taxing!

An offshoot of that is people who just dont listen anyway. If you proceed to tell certain people what time and event is and on what day, why would you then proceed to ask what time and day the event is? I just told you two minutes ago, please pay attention! I think its somehow worse if the people arent very old and just seemingly cant be bothered to listen...If people are of the more ancient variety, although just as annoying, you can sympathise a tiny bit due to the fact they can now hardly walk and need the toilet every five minutes!

    -Rude and Abusive People

I just dont get it. What on earth gives you the right to come in and proceed to treat the person who is trying to help you as best they can like dirt?

Ive never worked in what surely must be the most annoying set of customer service jobs to work in (places like BT and AOL where you get bounced around everywhere), but I do try my hardest, when calling one of these places, to remain calm and level....that way, the person on the other end doesn't get their defences up and proceeds to be more helpful as a result. It's not actually their fault that the company wont pay out on your insurance claim or give you a refund on whatever...use your heads!

I've never actually had someone swear at me yet, some of my colleagues have...which is somehow worse because if they start swearing at you, thats a dead certain way to say to them 'Im not serving you anymore because I'm not paid enough to deal with your swearing'...and you'd be justified in that.

And of course a good customer service person will figure out an approach that will pacify the person as much as humanly possible...however it still doesnt make it any easier having someone shout and rant at you when really, youre quite powerless to help anymore than you are already...if I tell you this is the situation, that is the situation, its not gonna change just because you spend the next 20 minutes trying to convince me otherwise! It may as well be a form of bullying....

-People who hang up on you

AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH! Omg, how insanely irritating and cowardly can you be! This surely is the ultimate most irritating thing....please disagree if you like, but I'm not convinced theres anything worse. The sheer mind numbing impoliteness of it...just because I havent told you we can give you a refund or change ur thing from this to that doesnt give you the right to end the call like that! What the person at the other end is saying is 'Yes I've won! He didnt help me so Im gonna hang up and really irritate whoever I've spoken to'. Its throwing your toys out of the pram, it's having a tantrum and saying 'I dont want to speak to you anymore, Im off!' So insanely childish and impolite...if I could make it illegal to do that, I would...I could go on all day about it!

    and relax......... :-)

  • The Lovely General Public-basic annoying ones

I think I should start probably by seperating the general public into their different annoying categories.....with examples....there are several that come to mind straight away. Here are some basic ones....in no particular order:

-Deaf people .....having to shout the same thing down the phone several times is very frustrating. I once had to shout full voice down the phone just so I can be heard and believe me, for anyone who knows me, I have a loud enough voice as it is! And just because they apologise for being deaf doesnt make it that much better! Following on nicely......

-People with children or babies ....I appreciate that a mothers life can be very difficult granted....I dont have one myself, but Im sure that having this little thing that requires constant attention can be quite stressful...however it makes things at least three times more difficult when all you can hear on ur phone is a child screaming at full volume!

-Super Annoying special one ....husbands who call up wanting your help, but then unable to decide without speaking to their wife at the same time. Then occurs a three way conversation which takes twice as long wheras if the wife was on in the first place, it would only take 5 minutes!

    - Foreign customers ....slightly controversial I'm aware, but alas its true that your job is made twice as hard of they have trouble understanding what youre talking about....just to confirm, Im in no way or do I agree with the movements of the BNP!

These are some of the more minor annoying traits people can come in or ring up with....following I like to class as 'medium' annoying ones....

  • Why working in customer services can be very hard work!-Intro

Hi, Im aubinoman....you may know me from such other blogs as 'giving up Facebook for a week' and errrr 'get thin today'.....okay maybe not the last one......

This is a general observational rant from myself on how irritating working with the general public can be....if you work with the public yourself or are looking for a job in that regard, hopefully this'll strike a chord with you.

Ive worked in customer service type jobs for about 7 years now....and just to be absolutely clear in case it somehow leaks out where I do actually work, THE TWO PLACES IVE WQRKED FOR IN THE PAST ARE NOT BAD PLACES TO WORK. This isnt especially to do with the places Ive worked, theyve both been and still are fairly nice places to work. This is more to do with how the blessed sweet general public can make things very annoying for you!

But just to reaffirm, I dont want to lose my job....so please dont fire me boss.....:-)
